Round 6 Game Reports

U/15 - Surrey Park / Moreland v Camberwell

MERGER WITH MORELAND A SUCCESS

The new team now called “Surrey Land” or “More Park” met played for the first time this week end in a match against Camberwell Heat.  The team met earlier than usual so that the guys from both teams could say hi to each other and meet the coach, Michael Lovett.  The boys then donned their Moreland tops and set about the business of playing Lacrosse.

The game began with a few sluggish moments as the team work was not quite there, but things got better and whilst we only scored 2 goals to 19 we finished off the game pretty well.

Tom C scored a great goal from Lachlan Dann’s first recorded assist and then late in the game just missed a poster in what would have been a sensational goal.

Our seven, whom we should refer to as the “magnificent seven” represented our club with pride and we in turn should be proud of the way they played for us. I am sure as time goes on the lads will form themselves into a formidable unit.

We will all miss our valiant attempt at putting together a Surrey Under 15 side but as we all know events have taken place that have made it impossible to happen.

I want to pay special mention to Dylan Ing and Mitchell Shaw who will now play with the Under 13 side. These two great kids and Lacrosse players stepped up when asked to play with us and really acquitted themselves really well.

As our last activity as a standalone Surrey Team we are going to have Pizza at Columbo’s  in Whitehorse Road Balwyn on Thursday after training from 6.45 pm to 7.45 pm.

Could all players please bring a $5 contribution to the night.

U/15 Girls - Surrey Park v Footscray

UNDER  15 GIRLS BEATEN BY FOOTSCRAY

Our under 15 girls had a hard game against Footscray going down 19-2 at the weekend.

The first half was reasonably tight with the score at 7-1 at half time and Surrey/Camberwell were unlucky not to have a few extra in the net but for some good defence by Footscray’s goalkeeper. The girls were missing Sarah with injury, in defence however Millie, Mia and Amanda did their best against a relentless attacking Footscray.  Our goal scorers were Abbie and Louisa. I am sure the girls will regroup and get back to the form that they have produced so far this season and their next win will hopefully not be far away.

U/13 - Surrey Park v Williamstown (Fearon)

Our young U/13 team continue to compete with spirit and determination against older teams. It was only in the second quarter where Victoria's strongest club in recent years (Williamstown) really outplayed us, scoring 8 goals. In the third term, we kept Williamstown to two goals - quite a feat.

In many respects, Williamstown were a stronger team than Footscray, with more players making an impact on the game. Unlike against Footscray, our team were not at all overawed by the size and numbers of the well-drilled Williamstown team, coming out ready to play. In fact, in patches, our team seemed to start understanding how to play together, outplaying Williamstown when they got going.

Most possession for the game was in our defensive half, tiring our Defenders and keeping our Goalie Ewan on his toes (10 saves for the match). The defence let Williamstown score six goals uncontested (one on one with the Goalie) in the first half, but really turned it around after half time, not allowing a single uncontested goal to be scored. Julian and Lachlan are developing an excellent feel for defence, with Lachlan cutting out a couple of passes. It felt like Blake had his highest number of possessions this season. Every goal stopped is worth two goals scored... so well done!

At training we will work on transitioning, taking the ball from defence up to attack through the midfield, which was shown during the game to be an area needing improvement if we are to score more. Long legs of Mitch and James looked great running the ball out of defence when their confidence was up, but they need players to pass to and we need to learn how to look after the ball when we have it.

A big difference between our team and Williamstown was stick skills. Confidence in catching on the run and throwing is something that every player can work on with a brother / sister, or against the wall at home or at school.

Our team worked hard, but Harrison scored Surrey's only goal  (assist to Hunter), but had the opportunity to score two more. When the ball got into attack, Dylan's speed with the ball forced sometimes three Williamstown defenders to him to stop him. When Alice got the ball to run at goal, we looked a good chance to score.  Cruz battled well in the face offs against players seemingly twice his size. It was great to have Daniel for his first full game.

Final score 20 Williamstown Fearon v 1 Surrey Park, but there were a lot of positives to be taken out of the game.

Thanks to Coach Blair, scorer Leigh and umpire Ritchie.

U/11 -Surrey Park v Camberwell

U/11’s Mixed  SURREY PARK  v/s  CAMBERWELL SCORPIONS

The sixth game of the season saw us return to the home ground to host the Camberwell Scorpions in a lively contest with an evenly matched opponent. We did gain an upper hand early though with 3 unanswered goals of our own in the first quarter and another 2 goals in the second quarter to lead 5 - 1 at half time. It was then a matter of keeping them at bay and holding out for a well deserved 7 - 5 win in the end. This is our second win of the season. It was an all out team effort and every player on the field contributed.

Once again we had a new player make his debut when we fielded River for the first time this season. He has had a few outings during iPlay Fridays and got a good first run in the inter club competition. Leo starred again in this game with 3 goals and 3 assists followed by Henry with 1 goal and 1 assist. Declan, Noah and Ashwin were the other goal scorers with Renalda notching up an assist. Domi kept the goal in the first half replaced by Megan in the second half. Tom and Xander were excellent in the mid-field and defense. According to the votes awarded by the opposition referee our best three players were Leo, Xander and Megan in that order. John was at hand to coach the side during the match and Andrew helped out with the refereeing duties. Thanks guys!
