2014 AGM - Notice of Meeting

Dear SPLC Members,

Following a government change to the rules governing Incorporated organisations such as SPLC, we are required to adopt the new model rules and include specifics relating to our club.

Please refer to the attached document that has the SPLC additions and changes shown in RED. The remainder of the document is as per the governments model set of rules.
In order for this to become our Constitution we require at least 75% of the attendees at our AGM to vote in favour of it.
The 2014 committee has agreed to the wording and now requests your support also.

In order to further clarify the rights of members, the Committee By-Laws have also been expanded to cover this topic. These changes do not need to be voted on at the AGM as your committee has already agreed that they be adopted.

Attached are documents including Notice of meeting, Agenda, Nomination and Proxy forms.

We look forward to seeing you at our 2014 AGM to be held in our new clubrooms Wednesday December 3rd @ 7.30pm

Kind Regards,

Andrew Burrett
Club Secretary

Surrey Park takes the 2014 Lacrosse Victoria Premiership

Surrey Park State League has taken out the Lacrosse Victoria 2014 premiership with a simply stunning 12-10 overtime win over Footscray at Chadstone last week.

The season started terribly for Surrey, dropping the first 3 games and finding themselves on the bottom of the ladder. When they fell to Caulfield in June they were 2-5 and staring down the barrel of missing the finals for the first time in a long while. However, the team came together that day and made a strong commitment to make the finals. Latest import Liam O’Connor had arrived and this was the start of a special trip. After a fiery loss to Williamstown over the bridge in Round 14, Surrey reeled off 10 wins in a row to make the finals and take the premiership.

It was the Grand Final that was the most impressive. Surrey didn’t hold the lead in any of regulation but the lead never stretched beyond 2 goals all day. Scores were tied at quarter time and half time but the Bulldogs had scratched out to a 10-8 lead at the ‘final’ break. In a defensive minded last quarter, Surrey were staring down the barrel of back to back GF losses with just a minute and a half to go. Enter Andrew Whitbourn to get us within one goal with just 1.20 left. Another forced turnover and Stephen Higgs, capping off his stunning game, got free and tied it up with just 9 secs left, sending the Surrey supporters into a complete frenzy. The overtime saw Surrey pull out a 2 goal lead within a couple of minutes thanks to two goals to Warwick Henderson. With the best defense in the competition led by Chris Tillotson in goals that would be enough for Surrey to take the premiership for the 7th time. Liam O’Connor took out the MVP award after dominating the faceoff and banging home 2 great goals. His amazing season will go down in Surrey history. Not only a great player but a great person!

Hammy nominated as Leader Newspaper 2014 Sports Star

Leader Newpaper published a terrific article about Andrew Ham's performances in the 2014 World Championships, penned by our own Ashley Davidson, and featuring the photography of former Surrey Park long-pole Kent Louey.

The full article, can be read here.

We'll let you know when it is time for vote!

Well done Hammy!

Surrey Park battle Malvern this Saturday in charge up the ladder

The Parkers have been a different side in the second half of the season to the team that lost 9-6 to Malvern in Round 6, handing over the Ron Alaimo Trophy to the men in black.

This Saturday is our chance to square the ledger.

Come and support your State League team, at Home, this Saturday 9th August, warm up at 2pm, with game start at 2:30pm.

If squaring the ledger wasn't enough incentive for the Parkers to continue their strong form, wins in their remaining three games of the season, including against Malvern, could see them finish as high as second on the ladder, placing them well for securing another grand final appearance. Malvern currently sit second on the ladder only one win ahead of Surrey Park.

Bring the family for a great day of lacrosse, canteen and bar will be open. We'll get the fire going at the end of the game (BYO Marshmallows!)

"Hammy" returns to Surrey Park after World Championships

Surrey Park’s own Andrew Ham was recently given the highest honour in Australian Lacrosse by being selected to represent his country at the World Lacrosse Championships this month. Being only held every 4 years 38 countries competed at the championships in Denver, Colorado.

Andrew was selected as a defender and after starting the first game against Japan and starring, remained as a starter for the remainder of the tournament. He matched up on the US’s All World forward Rob Pannell and kept him quiet for most of the game in probably his best outing. He also played a great game against Iroquois National Lyle Thompson (see picture) who is arguably the hottest player in the game right now. The gruelling schedule of 7 games in 7 days took its toll and the Aussies ended up 4th in a great effort against some vastly improving nations. The full schedule and box scores can be seen at http://www.worldlacrosse2014.com/nations/schedule. For the record Canada upset the host nation 8-5 to win the title for only the third time.

Andrew will make his way back to Australia after a well earned rest and resume his position in the Surrey Park State League team who will be fighting for a finals spot this year.

Surrey Park on the World Stage

Surrey Park's own long-pole defender Andrew Ham has started his campaign with the Australian Sharks as they tackle the world's best in Denver.

If you are not one of the many Surrey Parkers who have travelled to Denver for the World Championships, you can follow the Sharks and Hammy's progress through:

  • ESPN and ESPN2 (through Foxtel)
  • CoachesAid.com (Channel 125 for around $30 for all games or $6 per game)
  • The Australian Team's Sporting Pulse Page
  • The Australian Team's Facebook Page
  • Lacrosse Australia's homepage.

Apart from being the cornerstone of Surrey Park's defence, Hammy is very active in the Junior program, teaching our future national representatives how to play.

Go Hammy and go Sharks!

Surrey Kid Picked for the Big V

State League youngster and arguably the spirit of the team, Josh O'Neill has proved he can also play a bit by being selected for the 2014 Senior Victorian side to play on the upcoming Nationals.

Recruited from nearby Surrey Hills primary through the regular school clinics, Josh fell in love with lacrosse and made his way through the juniors learning every year. Eventually he worked his way into the State League side where he has stayed ever since. He starred in last year's Grand Final side taking on and beating the best face-off player in the league.

Josh will take his tenacity and heart into the Nationals and the Big V will be more competitive for it.

Senior Men’s & Women’s State Teams 2014 will compete in the National Championships in South Australia from Wednesday 4th June to Saturday 7th June 2014.

Keep an eye on the website for results from the Nationals and Victoria's performance updates.

Best of luck Josh - you've done your club proud again.

Top International Player is coming to Surrey

The club is very excited to have secured the services of Liam O’Connor from Notre Dame College. Liam is ranked number 3 in Face-Offs this season and is a player from the same college that our recent recruit Max Pfeifer came from.

We are very honoured to have such a talented player accepting our offer so we hope that everyone can make Liam welcome when he arrives. From all accounts, he is an outstanding young man both on and off the field.

You can follow Liam's 2014 NCAA progress at Lax Magazine and NCAA's website

Liam is doing his final year at college so will graduate in late May and then should arrive in Melbourne in mid June to commence playing with us.

If you would like to welcome Liam to the club and introduce yourself prior to arrival, he can be contacted on:

liam.oconnor31@gmail.com

In order for us to accommodate Liam we as a club will need to provide accommodation and some sort of work for him during his stay. We are therefore looking for offers of assistance from our members and friends to ensure that this happens. Please give this opportunity some serious thought and let us know if you can assist.

Generally speaking, life-long friendships often develop from these hosting opportunities with many Australians travelling to the USA etc to catch up and stay with their billet’s families in future years.

Please give this your serious consideration as we need your help and, we know that the experience will be a great one for you and your family.

Round 1 of State League to be held in Bendigo

Lacrosse Victoria has again decided that all Round 1 State League games will be played in Bendigo on Sunday 27th April 2014 commencing at 2.00pm.

Whilst this will require players and supporters to travel to Bendigo on the Anzac Day long weekend, the atmosphere should be exciting and all nine teams will be on show at the one venue.

Surrey has been drawn to play Williamstown in its first match for the second year running. Whilst this is sure to be a tough hit-out no doubt our coaches Nick Speak and Gary Tillotson will be doing their best to field our most competitive team.

Players and supporters will need to make their own travel arrangements to ensure that they are ready for a 2.00PM start.

ALRA will be supplying the match referees.

We encourage all players and supporters to look on this weekend as a positive start to the season and come along in their droves to cheer the Parkers home.

Andrew Ham makes Australian Men's Lacrosse Team

Surrey Park is excited to announce that Andrew Ham (Hammy) has been selected in the Final 23 for the Men's Australian Lacrosse Team. The team heads to Denver, Colorado in July to compete in the World Lacrosse Championships in what has been billed as the biggest lacrosse championships ever staged.

Andrew has been part of the Australian Men's Squad for the past 2 years and has been working extremely hard in what has a been a fiercely competitive selection process. What started as a squad of 60 of Australia's best players, has now been fine tuned to the final 23 man roster. Andrew has proven through his past years competing for Victoria and showing his dominance whilst playing for Surrey Park, that he is a very worthy selection.

Andrew is the first Surrey Park member to be selected for a Senior Men's Australian Team, since Greg Moore and David Spreadborough Jr who competed in Baltimore in 1998. Andrew follows in the footsteps of some Surrey Park champions by representing Australia. Join us all in congratulating Andrew on this fantastic achievement.

Over the coming weeks and months you will see some fundraising initiatives being held to assist Andrew with the significant costs of travelling to the World Championships. We'd love to see the Surrey Park family and friends get involved as best they can to assist Andrew. These achievements are rare, so let's get right behind Hammy and help him on his way to Denver.

Contributions to Hammy's touring costs can be made at his GoFundMe page

CONGRATULATIONS HAMMY from all your teammates, friends and family at the Surrey Park Lacrosse Club. A fantastic achievements that we are all very proud of.

SPLC's Ryan Hollenbaugh to play for Boston Cannons in MLL

Surrey Park Lacrosse Club's Ryan Hollenbaugh joins the Boston Cannons in US Lacrosse's premier professional competition - Major League Lacrosse (MLL).

Ryan Hollenbaugh joined Surrey Park for the 2013 Season after graduating from a very successful Athletic and Academic career at UMASS (University of Massachusetts ). Ryan was a integral part of a very dominant defensive unit and provided plenty of entertainment on the field. At UMASS Ryan was one of the teams best defensemen, garnering a series awards and accolades during his playing time. He continued this dominance whilst at Surrey Park, shutting down almost every opponent he matched up against, including some of the best in the competition. He was wonderful contributor on the field and and at practice and was always looking to help improve those around him.

Ryan is the fourth graduate from UMASS to play at Surrey Park, following in the recent footsteps of Greg Rushing also from UMASS who played with Surrey Park during the 2012 season.

After returning home, Ryan has continued to impress on the lacrosse front, by recently being drafted to the Boston Cannons (Major League Lacrosse). Ryan will be the first person to have played for Surrey Park and a professional Major League Lacrosse team.  You can follow Ryan's progress and see the recent announcement of his drafting at:

http://www.bostoncannons.com/press-release/9180/cannons-add-three-from-league-player-pool

And watch Boston Cannon Games on YouTube.

Good Luck Ryan. All the best from your friends and family at Surrey Park Lacrosse Club – Melbourne, Australia.
