Round 14 Game Reports

U/15 - Surrey Park / Moreland v Melbourne Uni

Winners are Grinners

Players, families and friends all were eager to see if we could push through for our first win for the season.

The signs were not good to begin with, with Connor being a later withdrawal due to illness and the Melbourne Uni side looked big, strong and they had a bench of 6. We had 12 fit players though determined to give it a red hot go, and that is exactly what they did.

Tom struck early and set up a great day for himself and the side when he took a great assist from, who else Darcy.  Everyone battled hard for the side, with special mention to Xavier who got out of his sick bed to play made a valuable contribution playing behind goal, acting as our feed and in goal in the last quarter. Noah played his best game for the year and seemed to draw foul after foul from the Melbourne defenders and gave off a punishing assist to help us move to a 4 -2 lead at half time. The third quarter was a tense affair and scores remained the same.  Darcy was impenetrable in defence and made some great attacking moves, but that elusive goal eluded him.

In the 4th Quarter Jerry came out of goal, Xavier moved into the cage and Jerry took face-off, he added instant energy to the game, scored a goal and made a few dashing runs.

The final score was Surrey – Moreland 7 Melbourne University 3.

A well deserved win and a really good game.

Next week we play Malvern at Surrey and we should be using the new clubroom. We’ll have a team photo after the match so please hang around. It would be great if you could all stay to watch the State League Game (a special one against Camberwell).

Finally, remember to book the baby-sitters for the "$2000 Draw night" on Saturday 30th August 2014 from 7:30pm and to bring the family to the Junior Presentation Night on Friday 5th September 2014. Both nights will be great fun and important fundraisers for your club.

U/15 Girls - Surrey Park/Camberwell v Williamstown (Swans)

Our under 15 girls were up against Williamstown Swans which was a must win game to keep their finals chances alive. It was good to see the girls positive start with two quick goals and steadily take control of the game. The attack was working well by moving the ball around waiting for the opportunity to score. Their efforts in attack resulted in a lead at half time with the scores 8-1.

The second half proved to be a repeat of the first half and it was great to see Zoe and Millie play one of their best games and each scoring goals. They were adequately backed up by Amanda and Louisa and Caitlin did a great effort going into goals for the first time. The final score was 12-2 and it was great see the girls get some of their early season form back.

Goals scorers were Abbie3, Tayla3, Laura, Louisa Zoe Millie, Maeve and  Amanda  1 each.

The final game is against Footscray next week and we wish the girls the best of luck.

Come down to watch the State League game in front of our new Clubrooms (Sat 23rd 2pm for 2:30pm face-off, with Div 1 curtain-raiser from 1:30pm). Finally, remember to book the baby-sitters for the "$2000 Draw night" on Saturday 30th August 2014 from 7:30pm and to bring the family to the Junior Presentation Night on Friday 5th September 2014. Both nights will be great fun and important fundraisers for your club.

U/13 - Surrey Park v Altona

With a BYE in the final round, the last game for our U/13 youngsters this season was against the strong Altona team, who currently sit second on the ladder. When we played Altona earlier in the season we lost by 19 goals. But the improvement of our team in the second half of the season has been such that we felt good that we would give Altona a real challenge.

Altona scored three goals to our none in the first quarter, but we had our own chances, and our defence made Altona work very hard for their goals. The second quarter Altona scored six, and Harrison worked hard to score Surrey's only goal for the half.

In a reversal of what has happened in past games against strong sides, in the second half, our young players determined that they were up to the challenge of putting it to one of the top-sides and played with renewed confidence. Harrison scored again in the third quarter, and Hunter scored in the final quarter. We had a lot of chances, and sharper catching and throwing could have scored Surrey three of four more goals. Most impressively, we were able to keep Altona to only five goals in the half.

Cruz, Hunter and Leo (playing up from the U/11 team) each scored assists, and our other mid-fielders of James, Dylan and Henry (also playing up from the U/11s) ran hard at the ball. Mitch again looked impressive running the ball out of defence, while the dynamic duo of Lachlan and Julian provided excellent support to goalie Ewan, who had a strong performance in goals, stopping 50% (12 of 24) scoring shots in the game, including 86% (6 from 7) in the third quarter.

Alice and Blake played both attack and defence as Coach Ferg (filling in for Coach Blair) moved players away from their 'favoured' positions. Hunter worked hard in face-offs against a strong face-off player from Altona.

Although the final score was 13-3 to Altona, the game was a great one to finish the season marking clearly the teams strong improvement. With most of the players still in the U/13 age-group next year, the Surrey Park U/13 team of 2015 will be a strong one.

It's been a great season, and all the kids are to be commended on their hard work and desire to improve. It really showed.

Votes went to Ewan (3), Hunter (2), and Harrison (1).

Thanks to Coach Ferg (James and Lachlan's Grandad), who did an outstanding job standing in for Blair, who was taking a week off, scorer Leigh (Alice's Dad) and umpire Matt (Julian's Dad) for wearing the zebra stripes.

Come down to watch the State League game in front of our new Clubrooms (Sat 23rd 2pm for 2:30pm face-off, with Div 1 curtain-raiser from 1:30pm). U/11 - Surrey Park v Footscray

The last game of the season saw us travel to the Angliss Reserve in Yarraville for the match against Footscray. It was a chilly morning with dense fog reducing the visibility to under a 100 meters but the fog had begun to lift by the time the game got underway. We had lent a couple of our players to the U13s team that were down a few due to illness, but we still fielded 10 players with the addition of Renee (an iPlay regular) who had her second game of the season. Her first had also been against Footscray, when they came visiting Mont Albert Reserve in July. The first half was a decent contest with  2 - 2 and 4 - 5 scorelines at the end of the first and second quarter respectively, with our team just ahead at half time. However, the relatively younger Footscray team could not keep up and we ran away with a 13 - 4 victory outscoring the opposition 4 - 0 in each of the remaining quarters.

Ashwin topped the scoresheet with 6 goals & 2 assists, scoring in each quarter. Sam scored 2 goals & provided 4 assists, followed by Renalda who had 2 goals. Noah scored 1 goal & provided 2 assists and Domi had 1 goal & 1 assist, after having kept the goal in the first half as usual. This time Griffin became the goal keeper for the second half. Tom scored the remaining goal and Xander provided 1 assist. It was a very good all round effort, especially in the second half when we defended very well, dominated the possession and scored freely. The passing was excellent and we chased down every ball whether in defence or attack. The voting for best players on our team (as voted by the opposition referee) went to Declan - 3 votes, Noah - 2 votes and Ashwin - 1 vote.

The team was coached by Alex Farley and Andrew Burrett was the referee. As usual, Joe Piccolo has provided us with some wonderful pictures. Thanks everyone for your help.

A brilliant end to a wonderful season where the team had 6 wins, 2 draws and 5 losses. Now we look forward to the lightening carnival next weekend, which will see all the U11 players from all the clubs take part in a fast paced lacrosse tournament.

Come down to watch the State League game in front of our new Clubrooms (Sat 23rd 2pm for 2:30pm face-off, with Div 1 curtain-raiser from 1:30pm). iPlay Report

The penultimate iPlay session for 2014 was another great night, good weather and good Lacrosse (although we had the usual few players away with the colds and other ailments).

The skill levels were once again extremely high, especially in the area of ground balls. Player after player trying to run through to scoop up the ball and no draw backs.

My thanks go to Sarah and Dylan for umpiring the games, Dylan is new to refereeing but filled in capably with the ever reliable Xavier home sick.

See you all for the last iPlay next week.
