U/13 - Surrey Park v Eltham

Coaches, parents and players were all really pleased with the team's performance at home against Eltham.

It was without a doubt the best performance the team put together yet. The 18-4 scoreline to the away team doesn't reflect how competitive our young team were. With improved confidence in front of goal, the score would have been much closer. In a great sign of our improvement at the attacking end, both Harrison and Alice scored two goals. James was a catch away from having one or two as well (but he did get an assist).

Showing that practice pays off, special mention has to go to Hunter. In the week since the last game, Hunter practiced his face-off techniques, researching new ways to cleanly win the ball on YouTube. Of the 10 or so face-offs Hunter faced, he won at least eight. Most cleanly by trapping the ball in the back of his stick. There is a great photo of Hunter trapping the ball in this way in the gallery

Winning the ball at the face off allowed Dylan and Cruz to run, and start to get into a rhythm to move the ball into attack. Daniel's game clicked into place in this game and he started to play with confidence and seemed to really enjoy himself. It was a shame he was not able to play for the whole game and it will be great if he brings this new confidence to training and the next game. With Daniel's early departure during the third quarter, the team were reduced to a bench of one but the team did a great job to keep Eltham to two goals in the final quarter.

As is becoming a feature of Surrey Park's game, and after a slow start where we let four uncontested goals be scored, our defenders, led by Lachlan, Julian and Blake supported by our midfielders made Eltham work hard for their shots. There are many shots showing fantastic Defence of our defenders and midfielders who ran hard the whole game). In another best for the team, Ewan's second half in goal was his best - ever. Out of 30 shots on goal, Ewan stopped 12, with seven in the final quarter.

Votes went to Hunter (3), Cruz (2), and Ewan (1).

Thanks to Coach Blair, scorer Leigh and umpire Danny W (for stepping in while Ritchie is in the US). And thanks to State League Players, Twitter, Josh and Hammy (shortly before getting on a plane for the Australian Team - World Cup) for taking the boys through their paces at training on Thursday. It really made a difference.

Remember to practice your catching and passing over the school holidays! Throwing against a wall (Wall Ball) is an easy and fun way to improve your stick skills. Google 'Wall Ball' or have a look at LAX Allstar's Wall Ball section.

U/11 - Surrey Park v Footscray

For the last game before our mid-season break we were back at home against FOOTSCRAY and we were back to how we had started the season recording a big win that finished with a scoreline reading 13 - 0. There was some excellent defending and passing and we maintained a steady tempo with the first three quarters  each netting 3 goals and finishing with 4 goals in the final quarter.

We were down on the number of available players for this game due to the start of the school holidays and illness but we still had enough to man the whole field plus one on the bench. Keeping up with what has now become a routine for us to introduce a new player each game, we had Renee play her first game of the season. She has been a regular at iPlay Fridays and enjoyed her first outing in a match against another club. She was pretty good in defense, notched up an assist and also bagged 1 vote from the opposition ref for best players on our team. It was however a Leo and Renalda show in attack with Leo bagging 7 goals and 1 assist while Renalda had 5 goals and 4 assists. Naturally they were the two best players on our team with the 3 and 2 votes respectively. Henry was the other goal scorer with 1 goal and 2 assists. The rest of the team also made handsome contributions as we had seven out of nine players bagging at least one assist.

Both Alex and John were on hand to coach the team. And we sent John off to his trip to the US with a win. Xavier Wick and Sarah Goucher helped out with refereeing duties. Joe Piccolo has once again provided us with some photos of the match, which you can show the kids in the gallery. Thanks everyone for your help.
