Round 2 Game Reports

U/15 Boys - Malvern v Surrey Park

In our first real hit out for 2014, because of the walkover we had last week,  we came up against a strong Malvern Unit, a group who have been playing together for about 3 seasons.

We played with new comer Connor Hodge and a host of players from last year’s Under 12’s in Dylan Ing, Mitchell Shaw, Xavier Wick and Noah Meade. We were also fortunate to have Ewan Dankesreither, the Under 13’s goalie standing in the cage for us and Sarah Goucher from the Under 15 girls. These new players were greatly supported by our “guns” from last year in Darcy Mim, Tom Ciszewski  and Jerry Basay.

Darcy and Tom are our Co-Captains for 2014 and Jerry will make up the leadership group, as Vice Captain. Congratulations to those players. My thanks go to Peter Mim and Brent Dankesreither for making sure our team sheet was properly completed and the scoring done, and to Ritchie Toomey for stepping in to umpire.

The score was 25 to 3. A result that on paper looks far more one-sided than it actually was. Often we forced a rollover in defence as our back line applied pressure. They were great in front of goal displaying stronger passing that made it almost impossible for Ewan to stop such fast and accurate shots.

We never gave up though and with a little more luck, and a few more games under our belt as a team and we could have seen a much closer score line.

Malvern are going to be a top side so we will live to fight another day and look forward to a stronger showing next week when we play Camberwell up at Surrey.

Congratulations to all players for your endeavor and support given to each other

U/13 - Malvern v Surrey Park

With two players away, including top-scorer Harrison, and playing an overall older opposition, the U/13 Team were facing a big task against a strong Malvern Team on a rainy day at Malvern.

In the first quarter, the team played well, with Hunter and James each scoring, but at the other end, our defence struggled and four point-blank shots made the score 4-2 to Malvern by the end of the quarter.

The heavy and muddy ground quickly tired young legs in the second quarter, and with no bench to give running players a rest, Malvern's size saw then jump out to a 9-3 lead by half time, with Cruz scoring Surrey's only goal.

In the third quarter, the defence started to put more pressure on the Malvern attack, and despite Malvern scoring five goals, it was much harder for them, with Ewan stopping three shots from close range.

The final quarter was Surrey's best and should allow them to take confidence into the next game. While Surrey had a lot of play in front of goal, it was only Dylan who ran hard and attacked the goal that scored for Surrey. Our team are still getting used to the U13 rules that don't require multiple passes before a shot. Coaches Blair and Mark will be working with the team to give them more personal confidence to take scoring shots when in front of goal.

It was great to see the team show terrific effort from the start to finish, especially, Mitch, Dylan and Ewan who had to make sure they had enough in the tank to play-up in the U15 game immediately after. In other positives, Hunter and Julian did well in their first attempt at the face-off challenges, after being given a two-minute lesson by Hammy. Lachlan continued his rapid improvement in the game, playing well at both ends and Alice and Blake gaining experience in new positions.

Thanks to Leigh Goucher for scoring and Ritchie Toomey for umpiring.

Final score: 16:4 to Malvern

Goal Scorers: Hunter 1, Cruz 1, Dylan 1

Votes: Cruz 3, Lachlan 2, Ewan 1

U/11 - Surrey Park v Malvern Black

After a brilliant season opener last week the under 11s mixed team suffered a sobering defeat at the hands of Malvern Black with a scoreline reading 12 - 3. We did have the home ground advantage but the weather was not ideal with a few showers throughout the game. This time we had a full strength side and the game was played with goalies on duty at either end. Zoe and Megan made their debuts for the team while both Henry and Domi chose to play the role of goalie for half the match. They both did really well with each blocking several goal attempts by the opposition.

The defending effort was good too but the Malvern Black players controlled the game well and kept steadily scoring throughout the game. Our team's passing effort did not live up to the standard set in the first round and that resulted in lost possessions and conceded goals... however the brother and sister duo of Leo and Renalda combined well to notch up the 3 goals and 3 assists between them to be the only two from our team to be on the score sheet. Leo also bagged the 3 votes from the opposition referee as the best player for Surrey Park.
